Predavanje prof. dr. Jureta Piškurja

Iz katedre za molekularno genetiko in biologijo mikroorganizmov Oddelka za biologijo BF sporočajo:

Vabimo vas na predavanje prof. dr. Jureta Piškurja z Univerze v Lundu  na Švedskem, ki bo v ponedeljek, 13. 12. 2010, ob 13.15. uri  v predavalnici P5 v Biološkem središču. Naslov predavanja je: Molekularni mehanizmi pri vzporedni evoluciji kvasovk. Kratek avtorjev povzetek predavanja: 

The fundamental characteristic of the Saccharomyces yeasts is their ability to degrade sugars to two-carbon components, in particular ethanol, even in the presence of excess oxygen. This characteristic is called the Crabtree effect and represents the background for the “make-accumulate-consume” strategy , which in natural habitats helps Saccharomyces yeast to out-compete other microorganisms. A whole genome duplication (WGD) and promoter-rewiring in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae lineage, which occurred around 100 mya, were the main molecular events providing the background for evolution of this strategy. Here we show that the Dekkera bruxellensis lineage, which separated from the Saccharomyces yeasts more than 200 mya, also efficiently make, accumulate and consume ethanol and acetic acid. Analysis of promoter sequences indicate that the D. bruxellensis lineage, just like S. cerevisiae, underwent a massive loss of a specific cis-regulatory element from dozens of genes associated with respiration, and we show that this promoter-rewiring contributes to the observed Crabtree effect.  Apparently, the same molecular mechanism has been employed independently by at least two distinct lineages.
